Do I really need to strength train?

YES!!

But I don't want to get "big," do I have to?

YES!!

Strength training is not just for body builders. Everyone who is looking to get into shape and stay healthy should strength train. "Why?" you might ask. There are several reasons:

1) Muscle burns calories. As we get older, our lean muscle mass decreases, which in turn causes our basal metabolic rate (BMR) to go down. Our BMR is basically the amount of calories we burn on a day-to-day basis just for our bodies to function. By increasing muscle mass, you burn more calories all-day. This can help you maintain a healthy weight.

2) Keep your bones strong. As we age, our bones get weaker, but doing resistance training can help our bones strong, which can prevent breaks.

3) Prevents injuries. Stronger muscles help protect us from injury.

4) Toned muscles look good. Let's face it, one big reason that people work out is to look good. Strength training helps to tone muscles to give a tighter, fit appearance.

Whatever your age, weight, or fitness level, strength training should be an important part of your exercise program. It is important to strength train properly in order to prevent injury. Fit by Focus can help you develop a strength training program that is right for you.
